Located on the west coast of Sri Lanka, Negombo Lagoon is a serene and picturesque destination renowned for its natural beauty and diverse attractions. The Beaches
Negombo Beach is highly rated among the area’s top beaches, remaining open all day for visitors to enjoy early morning strolls to catch the sunrise or romantic evening walks at dusk. Browns Beach in Negombo is also a favorite spot, perfect for a late-night swim and popular with both locals and tourists alike. This fantastic beach offers a variety of activities such as kite surfing, sailing, and windsurfing.
The Lagoon
Negombo Lagoon, located in southwest Sri Lanka, is a sizable coastal lagoon known for its delicate ecosystem and productivity. Fed by a canal and several small rivers, it connects to the sea via a small channel north of Negombo city. Surrounded by densely populated areas, grasslands, coconut plantations, and rice paddies, it features real mangrove plants in select locations. The lagoon also supports a diverse aquatic life, including fish, prawns, and crabs.
The Fish Market
Tourists can observe the diverse array of seafood brought in by fishermen each morning at the Negombo fish market. Fish are laid out to dry in the sun at the dry fish market before being salted and shipped. Tuna, mackerel, sardines, squid, and other seafood are available for purchase at the nearby wet fish market. Visitors have the opportunity to witness fishermen laying out their catch in the morning and can purchase the freshest fish available.
The Church
In the center of Negombo stands St. Mary’s Church, one of Sri Lanka’s largest cathedrals. Referred to as “Little Rome” due to its numerous churches and Portuguese-Dutch influences, the church is a stunning structure with cream-colored walls and black-and-white marble accents. Both locals and visitors can participate in morning prayers conducted beneath its exquisitely decorated ceiling. It’s one of the more cultural attractions in Negombo, a notable distance away from the Heritance Negombo.
