A visit to Phuket Island, Thailand, is usually done so with the goal of relaxing on its sandy beaches, enjoying water sports excursions, and taking part in its vibrant nightlife. But Phuket is also an island that is rich in cultural heritage and several temples scattered throughout the island that are worth visiting. This article details three temples that you should visit during your vacation.
Wat Chalong- The Grand Pagoda of Phuket
The Wat Chalong cannot be discussed without talking about the legend of Luang Poh Cham, a monk who lived in Phuket centuries ago. The monk was famous for his knowledge of herbal medicine, his healing abilities, and his vast understanding of Buddhism, which he spent considerable effort to spread. He was also crucial in mediating peace between a rebellion and the local authorities to prevent bloodshed.
The Wat Chalong, which houses his statue, is venerated by the people of Phuket. The temple itself is the site of pilgrimage for Buddhists, who visit the temple as an act of merit and to pay respects. The Grand Pagoda is one of the biggest attractions at Wat Chalong, a towering monument that stands at over 60 meters that houses a bone relic of Lord Buddha.
Sil Supharam Temple – Luang Poo Supa
A temple that prides itself on its beautiful Buddhist art, which starts at the gate itself, which is crowned with four statues of Lord Buddha on either side of it. Inside, there is a beautiful chapel, along with a pagoda with a relic of the Buddha housed inside.
Promthep Cape Temple – The Hidden Point
Nestled in the Promthep Cape, exists a very obscure temple next to the sea. Naturally, the location of this temple provides a stunning view for miles, and it would be a shame to miss out on it.
Other Temples
While these three famous temples are located on the Southside of the island, there are plenty of notable temples up North as well, such as the Wat Tha Chat Chai, right at the tip of Phuket. Luxury resorts on the island such as Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas are close to this temple as well, enabling you to visit the temple within just a couple minutes.
