Khao Lak, a famous tourist hotspot of Phang Nga province in Thailand, is known across the world for its stunning beaches and natural beauty. However, there’s much more to see than the waters and resorts. Filled with as much culture as the rest of Thailand, there are a few options to consider visiting – the various sanctuaries, temples, and markets – that make up the fun lurks in Khao Lak.
Take in the Turtles
These adorable, majestic creatures are a common sight at Khao Lak! You can find them at the Royal Thai Navy Third Fleet Sea Turtle Nursery, a place for turtle rehabilitation and protection, and they are released once they can fend for themselves. Located a short 15-minute drive from Khao Lak, there’s yet another sanctuary about 40 minutes from Khao Lak, where they breed and take care of hatching eggs.
Stroll through a night market
Street shopping, while a daily occurrence for locals, is not something that tourists might be acclimated to. However, there’s a lot to see in the night! Take in the Bang Niang Market, where the town comes alive. It’s one of the top things to do in Khao Lak for a reason, as all of the best Thai favourites are to be found here. The lively pop-up stalls, diners and shops with everything from lively street music to makeshift goodies, the area transforms once the sun sets into a street full of colour and life.
Visit Phang Nga Bay
While the bay itself might not be a hidden gem, there are a few hidden facts about it – did you know its caves and karsts are part of the iconic James Bond franchise – from the movie Man With the Golden Gun, which contributes to its name of James Bond island. It’s a step beyond your local tourist spots yet within reach of most properties such as the Avani+ Khao Lak Resort.
Experience culture at a Pagoda
A short drive away from Khao Lak lies the Bang Rieng Pagoda, a traditional representation of the local history and architecture. Taking inspiration from both Thailand and China as a whole, the scenery is awe-inspiring, as it’s situated 600m above land on the mountains, providing a panoramic view of the whole island.
