Hidden among the lush forests and majestic ruins of an ancient kingdom, the famous Lion Rock, also known as Sigiriya, is a must-visit attraction in Sri Lanka. If your itinerary includes this destination, here are 3 fascinating facts to know before you go.
The Architecture
The ancient rock fortress features fascinating architecture, with two giant lion paws at the bottom of the rock, and ruins of an ancient kingdom at the top. Before climbing the rock, explore other things to do near Sigiriya, such as observing the ancient waterways, gardens, and the mirror wall. You can walk from your stay at Ayurvie Sigiriya to here.
The History
The most famous and prominent tale of the history of Sigiriya is that the ancient kingdom was built by King Kashyapa in the 5th century, who moved the capital from Anuradhapura to here as a means to hide from his half-brother. The king died in 495 AD, and the fortress passed to monks in the area.
Things to See
The mirror wall is a scribble board for those who visit the famous attraction. Halfway to the top of the rock, you will encounter ancient frescoes that were the highlight of the kingdom. The colours and details of the frescoes are in great condition up to this date and attract many locals and foreigners alike.
